In our efforts to make every drop count we’re not the first household to ditch the bath towels. Incase you’re still wondering if using smaller towels (hand or kitchen) for our bathing needs is worth it, consider these significant effects of down-sizing how we dry-off:
- it decreases the size and number of our washing loads
- it greatly decreases the amount of water we use in washing our towels
- it decreases the amount of water lost in drying our towels (see 💦below)
- it makes doing the washing by hand so much easier (think: Day Zero)!

💦For interest sake we did a little experiment with a regular sized bath towel, a hand towel, and a terry cloth kitchen towel and found that after washing the towels and running them through the spin cycle in the washing machine:
- the bath towel retained about two and half cups of water (just over half a litre)
- the hand towel retained almost a three-quarter cup of water (just under one cup)
- the dish towel retained a tad over two tablespoonfuls (less than one third of a cup)
